Tax Issues

Sales Tax Increase for Marion County Effective 10/1/2011
September 26, 2011

Sales Tax Increase for Marion County Effective 10/1/2011

Sales Tax Increase for Marion County Effective 10/1/2011

Effective October 1, 2011 the Marion County sales tax rate will increase from 6.50% to 7.00%.  The following Q&A’s will assist in applying the new sales tax rate:

  1. When does the customer pay the new tax rate?
The increased tax rate goes into effect on October 1, 2011. If a customer purchases a vehicle on or before September 30, 2011, and either took delivery on or before that date or paid for the vehicle in full, he or she should still be charged the old tax rate.

  1. What if the customer finances the vehicle?
If the finance paperwork and contract is consummated and executed after October 1, 2011 the customer may be charged the new, higher tax rate.

  1. What if a customer purchased a vehicle and paid in full on September 30, 2011, but did not take delivery, do they pay the increased tax amount?
No. However, if they order before September 30, 2011, but did not take delivery and/or pay for the vehicle until after September 30, 2011, such as the case in a finance deal, they will pay the new, higher tax rate.

  1. What if a customer orders a vehicle on or before September 30, 2011, do they pay the old, lower rate?
Only if the individual pays for the vehicle in full on or before September 30, 2011.

Please remember, the above referenced sales tax increase only applies to Marion county.   If you have any questions please contact Ellen Mastrangelo or Nick Hanna at (440) 746-1500 or by email at ellen@gcada.org or nhanna@gcada.org .
