Cleveland Auto Show helps bump sales 33 percent in March

Cleveland, OH (April 11, 2011) – Sales of new cars and trucks jumped 33 percent in March of this year over the same period a year prior, according to statistics released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).

“While we were expecting an increase in sales due to pent up demand in the marketplace, these figures also represent a nice bump in business, which is due in part to the increase in traffic we saw at the Cleveland Auto Show this year,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, Jr. president of the GCADA. “Remember, we are comparing March of 2011 with March of 2010 when we also saw a bump in business from the auto show. So an increase of 33 percent in March of this year over the same time period last year is particularly significant.”

Consumer traffic at the Cleveland Auto Show was up more than 13 percent this year, according to the GCADA. For the year-to-date, a quarterly figure, local vehicle sales are 37.8 percent ahead of last year. The quarterly and monthly figures do not include the discontinued Saturn and Pontiac brands.

A total of 24 brands registered sales increases for the month, when comparing sales to the same period a year prior. For the year to date, 29 brands are up the first quarter of this year when comparing sales to the same period in 2010.

Chevrolet, which took over the number one spot locally from Ford in February, saw an increase of more than 78%, and it needed every one of those sales to stay ahead of Ford, which saw an increase of more than 27% for the month. Honda took home third place honors with 1,977 vehicles sold locally, while Toyota came in fourth with 1,896 vehicles sold during the month. Chrysler and Dodge sales grew by more than 70 percent each, while the Jeep brand registered a very strong increase of almost 54 percent for the month. The month also saw the aggressive return of Saab, whose sales grew by more than 725% when comparing March of 2011 with March of 2010.
