New car and light truck sales return to strong double-digit growth in August

Cleveland, OH (September 9, 2011) –Retail sales of new cars and light trucks returned to strong double-digit growth in August, growing more than 15 percent when comparing August of this year with August of 2010. According to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA), franchised new car dealers in Northern Ohio sold 19,208 cars and light trucks in August of 2011 compared with 16,678 in the same month a year prior.

“While there are still some concerns over the economy, this is certainly good news for auto dealers as well as our local economy, which is so dependent on the auto industry as a whole,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, Jr., president of the GCADA. “The return to strong double digit growth in August is indicative of the amount of pent-up demand still in the marketplace.”

Some brands had a slower month, due in large part to a lack of inventory caused by the tsunami disaster earlier this year in Japan. Last month, automakers reported that production was back up to pre-tsunami levels. Local dealers impacted by lower inventories are now reporting that new product is showing up at dealerships on an almost daily basis. Inventories are returning to normal levels, which could help bolster September’s sales somewhat.

A total of 24 brands registered sales increases for the month, when comparing sales to the same period a year prior. For the year to date, 27 brands are up from January through August when comparing sales to the same period in 2010.

In terms of total units sold for the month, Ford retained its number one spot over Chevrolet, selling 3,358 units compared to 2,889 for Chevy. However, Chevy’s sales for the month grew at more than 33 percent when comparing August of 2011 with August of 2010. Toyota grabbed third spot with 1,523 units, a significant increase over July of 2011, while Honda took home fourth place with sales of 1,176 units.
