New Vehicle Sales Keeping
Pace with Last Year

Cleveland, OH (June 8, 2016) –  Franchised new vehicle dealers sold 20,562 cars, trucks and SUVs in May, keeping pace with May of 2015’s total despite having two less days available in the month for dealers to sell vehicles. For the year to date, the market is essentially flat with last year with dealers selling 98,294 vehicles this year compared to 98,331 last year—a difference of just 37 vehicles, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).

“We continue to see what we expected in 2016 where motor vehicle sales are pacing with 2015, which was a very strong year for our region,” says GCADA President Louis A. Vitantonio Jr. “For May specifically, the difference is negligible compared to last year especially considering there were two less sales days in May 2016. We expect the market to stay on track with 2015 sales numbers through the end of the year.”

Sales of new cars, trucks and SUVs were off 0.14 percent when comparing May of this year with May of 2015. Dealers sold a total 20,591 new vehicles in May of 2015. Truck sales continued to be a bright spot for new vehicle dealers, with sales rising 9.51 percent in the month. Truck sales are up 8.2 percent for the year to date. Cars sales were off slightly, with franchised new vehicle dealers selling 13,308 cars in May compared with 13,967 over the same period a year ago, a decrease of 4.72 percent. Car sales are off just over four percent for the year to date.

Ford sold a total of 3,276 vehicles in the month, to retain its title of Northern Ohio’s best-selling brand. Chevrolet was not far behind, however, selling 2905 new vehicles for the month. Both brands were off just slightly when comparing May of 2016 with May of last year.

While Toyota performed well, ringing up a sales increase of 10.85 percent for the month, it was still outdistanced for third place by Honda, which sold 1,970 vehicles last month. Honda had an overall sales increase of 4.29 percent when comparing May of this year with May of 2015.

Fiat, Volvo and Audi each had big months, ringing up sales increases of 88.9 percent, 73.47 percent and 24.48 percent respectively.
