New Vehicle Sales in Northern Ohio
Outpace National Market

Cleveland, OH (May 5, 2017) –  Driven by exceptionally strong sales of trucks and SUVs, new vehicle sales across Northern Ohio continue to outpace the national market, according to statistics released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).

New vehicle sales across Northern Ohio rose 2.62 percent in April when comparing it to the same month a year prior. For the year to date, new vehicle sales in Northern Ohio are up 5.5 percent, outpacing the national market which was off by as much as 2.4 percent, according to published reports.

“We continue to buck the national downward trend in total vehicle sales month over month and year to date, however the market is very close to a plateau. Regardless, the market continues to perform at a record pace,” says Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “As we know, the motor vehicle market is cyclical. We fully expect ups and downs in the coming months.”

Dealers sold 20,266 new vehicles in April of 2017 compared to 19,749 vehicles in April of last year. Area dealers sold 9,229 trucks and SUVs in the month this year, compared to 6,976 trucks and SUVs in April of 2016, an increase of 32.3 percent. However, car and sedan sales were off for the month, with dealers selling 11,037 new cars compared with 12,773 a year ago, a decrease of 13.59 percent.

Despite having a month that was slightly off, Ford reclaimed its title as Northern Ohio’s best-selling brand, outdistancing Chevrolet. Ford sold 3,129 new vehicles in the month compared to 3,006 for the Golden Bowtie. However, Chevrolet did ring up a very impressive 17.15 sales increase for the month. Honda sold 1,699 vehicles in the month for third, while Toyota sold 1,555 vehicles for fourth place in Northern Ohio.
